JamPac-Ed boldly proposes a new field of study called Somascience — an integrative framework that explores human adaptation and development by examining how we relate to discomfort in lived experience
At the core of Somascience is the importance of staying connected to this whole-soma communication through our FEELINGS—especially the uncomfortable ones. The way we listen and respond to this somatic wisdom drives our choices and actions, impacting our self-identity and sense of belonging and purpose. In turn, this influences how we interact with others and our capacity to embrace growth in response to life’s challenges.
Crucial to Somascience is understanding our relationship to the discomfort that naturally arises in the lived experience. Our responses to uncomfortable FEELINGS can generate inflammation and compromise, or orient us towards our somawisdom to anchor in embodied safety.
Somatic literacy is learning how to orient towards, validate, understand and respond to this somatic wisdom, our somaintelligence. It’s the understanding of how to handle discomfort and better navigate change.
Somascience is an intentional synthesis of a diverse range of scientific disciplines, based on the understanding that no single field can fully account for the complex and intimately layered metabolizing processes at work within a human being.
JamPac-Ed invites a paradigm shift — one that centres somatic literacy at the core of the human experience.
The 5 Principles of Somascience
This series will unpack each of the five principles of Somascience one post at a time — through education, story, and practical tips — to help illuminate the invisible mechanisms at play inside our system. Alongside this series, you can access our Applied Blog with real time lived experience examples to support you to apply Somascience principles in your life.
Somascience is founded on five key principles:
1. We are a somatic communication system with in-built somawisdom
Our bodies are living communication networks. FEELINGS are the language of this system, continually transmitting information about what matters and what keeps us safe. How we respond to these somatic signals shapes how the system functions.
Seeing ourselves as a system opens us to new ways of validating and understanding our somaintelligence.
The strength of our connection with our somatic communication system is vital.
Seen through the lens of Somascience, our somatic wisdom is the lifeline to our wellbeing.
2. Somaplasticity is how the system responds to change in the lived experience
As living beings, we are experiential — constantly shaped by our lived experience. Our biology shapes our behaviour which in turn influences our beliefs; and our behaviour continually impacts on our biology and our beliefs —these three facets are all intimately connected. Every moment of life is simultaneously a conversation and a meeting point - between what happens inside us, what’s embedded within us, and what happens around us.
Somaplasticity is our inherent capacity to continually handle external and internal change by rearranging our behaviour, beliefs and biology during our lived experiences.
3. Our pattern-based learning is shaped by our relationship with discomfort
We learn and grow experientially and somatically in real time via somplasticity — our learning is not just encoded, it’s embodied. We build somatic communication patterns from our learning and reuse them for efficiency.
Adaptation involves navigating the instability and stability of change and the FEELINGS of discomfort that arise. We either reuse a protective pattern of response — a FafFF, a fast and familiar form of falsesafe — or stay connected during the discomfort by living life LIVE. Thus our relationship with discomfort, uncertainty and change has a major impact on what we learn and what patterns we generate.
4. FafFFs create self amplifying loops that compromise and constrain us
When we disconnect from our FEELINGS, especially discomfort, the system reroutes through compromise, distraction and invalidation. Over time, these responses solidify into somatic communication patterns based on avoiding discomfort— FafFF responses. They may ease discomfort briefly but destabilize the system and erode identity and relational trust.
Principle #4 maps the deep impact of FafFFs across our beliefs, behaviour and biology as well as our sense of identity, purpose and belonging. Their self-amplifying nature creates ongoing cycles of instability and insecurity that contribute to somatic inflammation. Over time, this can compromise our capacity to communicate, collaborate and adapt—constraining both our lived experience and the expression of human potential.
5. How we handle discomfort changes everything
